  • Non-stick Cooking spray
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread, sliced thick
  • 4 cups, half-and-half (or 2 cups each whole milk and heavy cream).
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided


    1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Place a rack in the middle of the oven and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Coat the paper with cooking spray.
    2. Cut the Challah or Brioche bread into 12 slices. Add 4 cups half-and-half, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, and 6 large eggs in a large bowl and whisk until smooth.
    3. Soak 1 slice of bread in the batter at a time. Dip the bread, flipping once, until moistened on each side. Place each piece of bread on one of the baking sheets. 6 slices should fit on each sheet. Repeat with the remaining slices. Keep any remaining batter until the end.
    4. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the bread is light golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for 20 minutes. When cooled, dip the bread back in the batter and return to the baking sheet.
    5. Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 3 slices of the bread in a single layer and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Flip and cook until both sides are browned. Transfer the bread to a serving plate.
    6. Repeat the previous steps with the remaining slices of bread, until all the bread has been fried on both sides and is crispy and browned. Serve hot with maple syrup, whipped cream, and your choice of fresh fruit.
    7. Store any leftover French toast in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
